An ornate gold inkstand with an embedded clock that once belonged to Catherine the Great is to be among the highlights of “Guardians of Time. Conservation at the Moscow Kremlin Museums,” an exhibition scheduled to run from July 12 to Oct. 13 in Moscow.
The purpose of the event, according to the museums, is to showcase the work that conservators did over the last five years on more than 80 objects, including the inkstand.
“The state of preservation of the inkstand with clock did not allow us to show it at exhibitions,” said Vadim Yakovlev, the museums’ metals conservator, who spent more than a year restoring the piece.
The design of the late 18th-century stand — a desktop-size piece that includes an elaborate scene with gold-embossed cherubs holding measuring tools representing the sciences, highly respected during the Enlightenment, a pile of books (with a hidden drawer in the top one) and a hollow metal obelisk behind the small clock — reflects “the fashionable aesthetic and artistic preferences of its time,” said Ekaterina Shcherbina, the museums’ leading researcher and curator of jewelry, clocks and watches collections. (Her email replies, and Mr. Yakovlev’s, were written with the help of translators.)
Everything, including the stand’s decorations and its hidden wooden base, required restoration, Mr. Yakovlev said.
“Some of the elements were poorly fixed,” he wrote, with the mother-of-pearl floral decoration falling off the obelisk because the glue had “lost its binding properties over time.” (He had to remove the objects around the pillar, dismantle it and then reglue the hundreds of small stones one by one, making sure each piece was dry before placing the next one).
The clock was in a better shape, and “only lubrication was lost,” Mr. Yakovlev said.
The maker of the unmarked inkstand is unknown, but the clock’s enamel dial has the name of the French watchmaker Jean-Antoine Lépine, a clock and watchmaker to Louis XVI of France and Napoleon. Lépine has been credited with a number of horological advances. And Frères Melly, the Swiss watchmakers and jewelers, are known to have replaced the clock’s mechanism from 1789 to 1794.
Mr. Yakovlev wrote that he “dismantled the work, disassembled it and cleaned the parts in special solutions. Thereafter, it was processed with different lubricants, which require application to certain centers of clock work.”
Washing and lubricating the fusee chain — part of the mechanism that helps timekeeping accuracy in older clocks and watches — was difficult because each link is only about two hundredths of an inch wide.
But the trickiest part of the process, he said, was ensuring that the escapement, the mechanical inner workings of the timepiece, was not damaged.
The museums plan to put the inkstand on permanent display when its new building on Red Square is opened, scheduled for 2022.B:
